State Approval for SFR

FEC Energy and Crops for Energy have been granted Secretary of State Approval to operate the SFR as an authorised list of approved fuels. It is almost two years since we started working on the SFR, which shows just how difficult, time-consuming and involved a process it has been. So, all the more reason to celebrate the fact!

What does this mean? I hear you ask...

Well, we:

Hot coffee grounds

The Sustainable Fuel Register (SFR) will provide a mechanism for demonstrating the sustainability credentials for all sorts of non-wood fuels. Among the most exciting of these are biomass pellets and briquettes produced from waste coffee grounds (WCG) by bio-bean.

SFR provides greater traceability

We recently attended the Wood Heat Association members meeting in Birmingham and, following discussions about the future of the Biomass Suppliers List, it became clear that the industry is concerned about the traceability and integrity of sustainable fuels.

This is something that we have also been conscious of, as not only does it provide peace of mind to those in the fuel chain, but it gives the biomass industry greater value.

Registrations at the ready

The Sustainable Fuel Register (SFR) is about to receive Secretary of State Approval and we are almost ready to accept online registrations!

Easy RHI compliance for non-wood fuels

Up to now, meeting the RHI sustainability requirements if you didn’t burn wood was difficult. However, after more than a year of discussion and proposals to DECC, we have secured their agreement to proceed with an alternative to the Biomass Suppliers List called the Sustainability Fuel Register (SFR). The SFR will ease the self-reporting burden, once we have approval from the Secretary of State.

We hope to have official approval by mid-Summer. Until then, you will be able to register your details and interest in SFR on the website, which will be live very soon.
